Music in Nepal-Bhasa(Newari)

To introduce you about Nepal-bhasa or newari language, it is the language of an indigenous people called "newa-people" from a small valley called Kathmandu in Nepal. The Newars have been living in this part of Nepal form the prehistoric times and are responsible for the creation of historical civilization and its tradition and culture along with the music of Newars. The instruments, songs and dances have been conserved and protected since thousands of years till today. They have been taught from the old generations to the younger ones which is why they are still preserved and alive. Those dancing, singing and playing of the musical instruments are mostly held during festivals, celebrations and special occasions. But now a days a lots of programs are being held in different parts inside and outside of the country for its promotion and identity.

The traditional newa music consists of sacred music, devotional songs, ballads, folk songs and seasonal songs. one of the most well-known seasonal songs is Sitala maju. the ballad describes the expulsion of children from Kathmandu in the early 19th century. The ballad Rajamati about unlucky lovers is widely popular. But today alots of modern newari songs are being published along with different music videos sparkling the shine of Newa people.

 The above video is a perfect example of a newa music of a newar boy trying to impress a newar girl. Music, costumes, tradition, dance and other aspects of Newari music can be seen in this recent music video. How people dress, how they dance, sing, the musical instruments used and even tools used for farming are shown in this video. The music, the lyric and everything in this is unique in its own way.

Thus, the music in newari bhasa itself reflects all the culture, tradition, costumes and almost everything the newa people do. The newa music can be related as the blood of newar people as it flows through each and every part of life of newa people.
