Dhime Baja

"Dhime" is a traditional Newari musical instrument. It has a very important part to be played in Newar community and also very popular along Newars. It is a cylindrical type of somewhat like a drum but consists of two drum skin on the either side. The drum skins are literally made of animal skins. The lateral part of dhime is either made of wood or nickel. the drum skins are tightened by animal veins or skins which is supported by the two skin one to another. Like that in drum it also consists a somewhat like a drumstick but only one. The stick is called "Tae-khur-cha". It is made from bamboo stick which is bent into a spiral shape at one end. The dhime baja is carried on the shoulders with a belt like stripe just like the one in guitars. The one end of dhime is beaten with taekhurcha with one hand and the other end is beaten with bare palms one after other or at same time producing a rhythmic beat sound and music. The "bhusya" is also played along dhime giving it cue and beat. Bhusya is similar to cymbals.

The music produced by dhime baja is specific and definite. The melody and music produced in this instrument has been same since the ancient times. The way to play it and the melodies are taught from the old generation to younger generation in a traditional way in only a special span of time. In this way the music is still alive among the Newars. The notes are remembered by making a melody by uttering the sounds which are similar to the sound when the dhime is beaten. There is a special kind of dance which is performed during the music. This dance also dates back to the ancient times of newa people.This instrument is mainly played during festivals, celebrations and other special occasions.
